The Clank Outside the Train
A free big truck bedtime story, written for ages 4–6 and ready to read aloud in about 3 minutes. Tonight's hero is Leo.
CLANK! CLINK! Something banged outside the train window. Leo pressed his nose near the glass. The train curved above a busy road yard. Yellow dump trucks rolled below. A red tow truck waited by the gate. Orange leaves skittered across the road. Leo had to spot the noisy truck before the train passed.
His quiet friend Mara shared the window. Their families sat just behind them. “I think it’s the tow truck,” Mara said softly. “It’s the dump truck,” said Leo. “Dump trucks first!” “Tow truck first?” asked Mara. “No. Tow trucks only pull things,” Leo said. “Dump trucks do the big jobs.” Mara stepped back from the glass.
Leo watched the biggest dump truck. Its bed rose high. Gray stones poured out with a long, rocky RRRRUMBLE. Leo grinned and waited. No clank came. The bed lowered. Still no clank. “That wasn’t it,” Leo said. From the other end of the yard came CLINK-CLANK! “Mara, come look!” But Mara stayed by her seat.
Leo almost called again. Then he noticed her face. She was not watching any trucks now. She stared at her red shoes. Leo remembered what he had said. He still wanted to find the sound. But he wanted Mara at the window, too. He walked over to her. “I made your truck sound small,” he said. “I’m sorry.”
Mara peeked up. Leo moved aside and left the best window spot open. “Can we try your tow truck first?” he asked. “Together?” Mara whispered. “Together,” said Leo. Mara came back. Leo did not rush her. He waited until they stood shoulder to shoulder. Then they looked out the other side.
The red tow truck rolled over the bumpy road. CLINK! Its silver hook tapped the metal plate behind it. CLANK! It tapped again. “There it is!” Leo cried. Mara smiled. The tow truck stopped beside a small dump truck. The dump truck’s back tires spun in soft mud. The mud made silly plop-plop sounds. The tow truck gave one slow, gentle pull. Out rolled the dump truck. Leo laughed. “That is a big job!” “And the dump truck has a job, too,” said Mara.
The little dump truck carried stones to the dry road. The tow truck rolled beside it. Now Leo heard every sound. Rumble from the dump truck. Clink-clank from the tow truck. The train began to curve away. Leo and Mara waved from the wide window. Below them, the two trucks rolled side by side, with orange leaves spinning around their tires.
