Finn Starts the Superhero Parade

A free superhero bedtime story, written for ages 4–6 and ready to read aloud in about 3 minutes. Tonight's hero is Finn.

Finn knelt beside a crooked drip castle. The summer sun had warmed the firm beach sand. With one finger, he drew a giant superhero badge. A bold wave curled across the middle. Finn added five strong stars around it. “Beach heroes, ready!” he called. He pressed his palm into the center. One sandy star lifted a point.

Then the star stood up and shook off its sand. So did the other four. They became the Beach Hero Team. They wore shell helmets and green seaweed capes. Captain Coral was as tall as Finn’s knee. A purple shell sat on top of her helmet. “Finn, we need one more superhero!” she cried. “The Superhero Splash Parade starts soon!”

Behind her stood a parade float shaped like a red crab. It had six round wheels made from driftwood. The beach heroes needed it for their opening cheer. But the float would not roll. They pulled the front rope. “Heave-ho, heroes!” Their boots slid through the sand. The float stayed still.

Captain Coral pushed from one side. The other heroes pushed from the back. Finn put both hands on the crab’s red shell. “One, two, three—push!” Sand sprayed behind their feet. The wheels made one tiny creak. Then nothing. “We will miss the opening cheer,” Captain Coral said. Nobody wanted the parade to start without them.

Finn stopped pushing. A thin blue rope lay beside his foot. The rope was pulled straight and tight. It ran to a little wooden anchor behind the float. The anchor was still deep in wet sand. “Wait!” Finn called. “Your parking anchor is still down!”

Finn grabbed the anchor’s smooth handle. He pulled up with both hands. POP! The anchor came out in one sandy lump. Captain Coral’s purple shell tipped sideways. “The float was not stuck,” Finn said. “It was still parked.” The heroes giggled. Finn hurried back to the crab float. “Now push with me!” he said.

Finn planted his feet behind the float. “One, two, HERO!” Everyone pushed together. Rumble-rattle, rumble-rattle! All six wheels rolled. The red crab float bumped onto the firm sand. Its claws bobbed. Its seaweed flags flapped. Finn took the front rope. “Parade team, this way!” he called.

They reached Seashell Arch as the first bucket drum boomed. Finn led the crab float under the arch. Three shell pinwheels spun. The crab’s claws clapped: clap-clap-clap! Captain Coral raised both arms. “Our sharp-eyed hero got us rolling!” she called. The team shouted, “Finn! Finn! Finn!” Then Finn led the opening cheer. “Beach heroes, ready?” “Ready together!” they cried.

The float made one happy lap around the crooked drip castle. Then the five beach heroes stepped onto Finn’s badge. They became sandy stars again. Captain Coral was last. She pressed her purple shell beside Finn’s handprint. “For Finn,” she said. Finn traced the badge once more. He smiled at five star prints, one purple shell, and his wide, sandy hand.
