Theo Joins the Princess Parade
A free princess bedtime story, written for ages 4–6 and ready to read aloud in about 3 minutes. Tonight's hero is Theo.
Princess flags snapped over the summer carnival. Theo hurried past the lemon ice stand. He was going to the Princess Parade. Real princesses came from every nearby castle. Theo found a spot beside the round parade ring.
The drums went boom-biddy-boom. One by one, the princesses crossed the ring. Each spoke the name of a brave princess from long ago. The crowd repeated every name. Soon, only one princess was left.
But Princess Nia did not come out. The drums stopped. The princesses waited in a half-circle. Then Theo heard something behind the striped tent. Clink. Clink. Clink.
Theo went to discover what made that sound. Behind the tent, he found Princess Nia. She wore red boots with gold buckles. One boot tapped the other. Clink. Clink.
“My grandma’s name comes last,” Nia told Theo. “Princess Safiya began this parade. But the crowd is so loud. My knees feel wiggly.” Nia looked toward the ring. “If I stay here, her name will not be said.”
Theo noticed something important. Nia’s voice sounded clear when she spoke to him. It had not vanished at all. “You can tell the name to me,” Theo said. “I will walk beside you. Just look at me when you speak.”
Nia took one small step. Then she stopped. “Even when the drums go boom?” she asked. Theo nodded. “Even then.” He stepped into the ring first. Nia took a breath and walked beside him.
The drums began softly. Boom. Boom. Theo stayed close. Nia looked right at him. “Princess Safiya!” she said. Her voice reached the whole ring. “Princess Safiya!” everyone called back. The last name was remembered. The parade was complete.
Nia grinned, and her red boots skipped once. Theo skipped beside her. Later, they shared a lemon ice on the wooden ring step. Above them, the princess flags fluttered in the warm summer breeze.
