Sam Rides the Race Track Train

3-minute read-aloud · Ages 4–6 · Free bedtime story

A free race car bedtime story, written for ages 4–6 and ready to read aloud in about 3 minutes. Tonight's hero is Sam.

Sam rode a small red train beside a race track. Summer sun flashed on its silver roof. A yellow race car marked 8 sped past. ZZZOOM! Sam spotted its wide tires and low back wing. This was the train ride Sam had wanted.

At Two-Loop Station, every rider had a choice. The Pond Train went past ducks and tall reeds. The Race Track Train went behind the garages. Sam wanted to see where the fast cars waited. Then an engine gave a sudden BRRRAAAM behind the glass wall.

Beside Sam stood Niko, a younger rider. His blue cap had two floppy ears. Niko held the cap tight. “I want the race train,” he said. “But the big sound jumps at me.” The other riders paused too. The race train waited with its doors open.

Sam looked through the glass. Five round red lights hung above the track. Sam had watched race starts many times. Right away, Sam had an idea. “The lights tell us before the cars go,” Sam said. “Watch them with me. We can get ready for the sound.”

One red light came on. Then two. Then three, four, five. “Now,” said Sam. Everyone gently covered their ears. The lights went dark. The cars sped away with a muffled VROOM. Niko blinked, then smiled. “It did not jump at me!” he said.

Sam pointed to the Race Track Train. “That is my choice.” Niko chose it too. So did the other riders. They climbed into the glass-sided car. Everyone found a seat facing the track.

The train curved around a hairpin bend. Eek-eek went its little wheels. It rolled under the grandstand and behind the garages. Inside stood red, blue, and green race cars. One car had its front cover lifted. Sam could see neat silver pipes underneath. Then Sam spotted yellow number 8. Its driver lifted one gloved hand. Sam waved back.

At the far side, the starting lights appeared again. Niko called, “One, two, three, four, five!” Every rider got ready. VROOM went the cars. This time Niko laughed. The train curved beside them on its own safe rail. For one bright moment, train and cars moved together.

Back at the station, the engines became quiet. Yellow number 8 rolled into its garage. Sam and Niko stood at the train window, still waving. Niko’s floppy blue ears bobbed in the warm breeze.

Tonight, the hero was Sam. Tomorrow, it could be your child.
