Ivy Chooses the Pirate Picture

3-minute read-aloud · Ages 5–7 · Free bedtime story

A free pirate bedtime story, written for ages 5–7 and ready to read aloud in about 3 minutes. Tonight's hero is Ivy.

On Gull Island, Ivy found a pirate story cut into a wide, flat rock. One picture showed a ship. One showed a wheel. Another showed pirates sharing coconut cakes. The last picture was smooth and empty. Ivy brushed warm summer sand from it. “That can’t be the end,” she said. “Pirate stories need the best part.”

Scritch, scratch, scritch. The carved waves began to wiggle. The ship rose from the rock until its rail reached Ivy’s shoulder. Its cloth sail popped open. Down stepped Captain Nessa and Pip, the lookout. Pip wore red-and-white striped socks inside his boots. “Good!” said Captain Nessa. “A shore voice has found us.”

She spread the sail across the rock. It held the same pirate pictures. One white square waited at the end. “This is our story sail,” she said. “It stitches the last scene it hears. When the sea reaches the carved anchor, the story closes.” A thin line of foam slid closer. Pip looked at the blank square. “My part is not there yet.”

Captain Nessa touched her blue hat. “We could show me planting our flag. That proves we reached Gull Island.” Pip pointed toward the calm green cove. “Or we could show me spotting this cove from the mast. That is how our ship found the island.” The blank square was only big enough for one scene. Both choices mattered.

Ivy looked along the sail. She saw Captain Nessa at the wheel. She saw her reading the chart. She saw her beside the coconut cakes. Then Ivy searched every picture for Pip’s striped socks. Not one red stripe appeared. If the flag scene went last, Pip’s important lookout work would be left out.

“I choose Pip spotting the cove,” Ivy said. “The flag is important. But Captain Nessa is already part of the story. Pip isn’t in it at all. People should know who saw the island first.” Captain Nessa smiled at Pip. Pip stood tall. Yet the white square stayed empty. The sail needed a shore voice to call the scene.

Ivy’s tummy gave one small flip. Calling a pirate scene meant speaking loud enough for the whole cove. Even the gulls might hear. Ivy planted her feet on the warm rock. She cupped her hands around her mouth. “Lookout Pip climbed the mast!” she called. “He looked past the waves. Then he saw Gull Island and its safe green cove!”

The pirates sprang into the scene. Pip shaded his eyes. Captain Nessa gripped the wheel and turned. The blank cloth went scritch, scratch, scritch. Blue thread made the cove. Brown thread made the mast. Red thread stitched two bright stripes above Pip’s boots. With a final tug, the story sail was finished.

The foam touched the carved anchor. The sail settled back into stone. Captain Nessa and Pip became part of the rock again, both smiling in their pictures. Ivy knelt beside the new last scene. She traced Pip at the mast, then Captain Nessa steering toward him. Under Ivy’s fingertip, two tiny striped socks stood clear and red on the quiet shore.

Tonight, the hero was Ivy. Tomorrow, it could be your child.
