Zoom, Zoom, Room for Two!
A free space bedtime story, written for ages 5–7 and ready to read aloud in about 4 minutes. Tonight's hero is Zoe.
The rocket Firefly sat in the summer grass with its round nose pointed at the sky. It was silver, with three red fins and a door that opened with a happy clank-clank. Zoe bounced on her toes. She loved rockets best of all—the rumble, the buttons, the way a ship could carry friends right up into space.
Beside her stood Mia in an orange cap with a tiny white moon sewn on the front. Mia was Zoe’s best rocket friend. Together they had made a space rhyme for Firefly’s memory star. It went, "Zoom, zoom, room for two! Zoe and Mia, off we flew!" Every crew that flew Firefly got to save one rhyme in the memory star, a little glass star on the control wall. If the star stayed blank, the rocket would not remember their trip.
Inside Firefly, the seats were soft and blue. The floor had silver speckles, like someone had sprinkled tiny stars on it. Zoe slid into the left seat. Mia slid into the right seat. In front of them was a round window, a row of buttons, and one big purple button in the middle. Above it, the glass memory star waited, empty and clear.
"I want to say the first line," Zoe said. "I thought of zoom, zoom." Mia folded her arms. "But I thought of room for two. I want to say the first line." Zoe’s happy rocket feeling got a little tight. "I climbed in first," she said. "So I should start." Mia looked down at her moon cap. "Then maybe it is just your rhyme," she said quietly.
Firefly gave a cheerful beep. The door closed with a soft shoop, and the rocket lifted as gently as a bubble. Up went the grass. Up went the sunflower rope around the launch field. Soon the sky turned dark blue, and bright little stars popped into the window. Zoe loved it, but the seat beside her felt very far away, even though Mia was right there.
At Comet Corner, Firefly sang, "Memory star time!" The big purple button blinked. Zoe sat up straight. She wanted their rhyme in the star more than anything. She pressed the button with one hand and said, "Zoom, zoom—" Nothing happened. The glass star stayed clear. Mia pressed the button with one hand and said, "Room for two—" Nothing happened again. Mia’s mouth made a small sad line. "It’s going to forget us," she whispered.
Zoe looked closer. She looked at the button, not just the blinking light. Around the purple button were two small hand shapes pressed into the panel. One hand shape was on Zoe’s side. One hand shape was on Mia’s side. Zoe’s heart gave a little hop. The rocket was not broken. The rhyme was not lost. Firefly was waiting for both of them.
Zoe took a brave breath. It felt harder than pressing any button. "Mia," she said, "I don’t want Firefly to remember me without you. We made the rhyme together." Mia looked up. Zoe held out her hand, close enough for Mia to see. "Will you press with me?" Mia’s face warmed. "Yes," she said. "Room for two."
Zoe put her palm on one hand shape. Mia put her palm on the other. Together they pressed the purple button. Click! The glass memory star filled with a bright silver sparkle. Together they called, "Zoom, zoom, room for two! Zoe and Mia, off we flew!" Firefly answered with a happy ping-ping-ping, and the star saved every word.
Then Firefly made one smooth loop around Comet Corner. Zoe and Mia laughed so hard their shoulders bumped. When the rocket coasted back over the warm summer meadow, the round window showed the memory star shining on the wall, with Zoe and Mia’s names glowing side by side.
