Ivy Leads the Butterfly Parade

A free butterfly bedtime story, written for ages 3–5 and ready to read aloud in about 3 minutes. Tonight's hero is Ivy.

Three orange butterflies sat on Ivy’s little drum. Ivy held very still. Today was her first Butterfly Parade. It happened in Daisy Garden, on a small island. The path curled past yellow flowers and the blue sea.

The parade team wore soft wings. Ivy would lead with her drum. They had to reach Sunflower Circle. The summer garden dance would start there.

“Ready?” called Ivy. “Ready!” called the team. The orange butterflies lifted from the drum. Flap-flap-flap! Ivy wanted a big, exciting start.

“BOOM-boom-boom-boom!” she played. Her feet rushed down the path. The team rushed after her. Wings bumped. Sandals shuffled. The last marcher spun the wrong way.

“Too fast!” called the team. The beat bounced faster and faster. Boom-boom-BUMP! Now the steps were all muddled. Sunflower Circle was still ahead. The garden dance was about to start.

Ivy stopped her drum. “That was me,” she said. “I drummed too fast.” Then she saw the real butterflies. They did not rush. They fluttered over the garden. Then they rested on bright pink flowers.

Ivy smiled. “Let’s move like them. Flutter, then rest.” She tapped a new beat. Tap-tap. Stop. Tap-tap. Stop. She took two small steps. Then she stood still.

The team followed Ivy’s beat. Two steps. Stop. Two steps. Stop. Their wings had room to flap. Nobody bumped. Down the garden path they went.

They reached Sunflower Circle as the dance began. “Flutter, then rest!” everyone cheered. The team danced between the tall flowers. Orange butterflies fluttered above them. One landed on Ivy’s drum. Ivy grinned and held the drum still.
