Sam Finds the Giant Paw Print
A free kitten bedtime story, written for ages 6–8 and ready to read aloud in about 3 minutes. Tonight's hero is Sam.
Sam had just counted six kitten tails around a green beetle. The beetle flashed in the noon sun. Then it zipped beneath a fern. The kittens sprang apart. In the soft clay below them sat one enormous paw print. It was as wide as Sam’s sun hat. Marmalade, an orange kitten with one white paw, stared at it. “A giant forest cat!” she cried. Six kitten tails shot straight up.
Sam crouched beside the print. The kitten team had explored all morning. They hoped to share a fine discovery at the forest celebration. Beyond the ferns, the first drum went boom. The kitten march would start soon. “We cannot leave this,” said Marmalade. “But we cannot miss the march!” cried another kitten. Sam looked closely at the clay.
“Maybe a giant cat danced here,” said Marmalade. “Maybe it has eight toes,” said a gray kitten. Sam did not answer yet. The print was wide and messy. Little toe marks poked from every side. Sam held up Marmalade’s white paw. All four toes were at the front. “A real paw points one way,” Sam said. “This print points every way.”
Then Sam remembered the shiny beetle. All six kittens had crowded around it. “I have an idea,” Sam said. Sam found a smooth patch of clay nearby. Then Sam drew a small circle with one finger. “Stand around this circle. On three, press one paw into the middle.” The kittens took their places. They lifted their back paws. “One, two, three!” called Sam.
Squish! Six paws landed together. When the kittens stepped back, one enormous print filled the circle. Toe marks pointed in every direction. It looked just like the first print. Marmalade’s mouth fell open. “We made the giant paw!” she said. Sam nodded. “You all stepped together when the beetle ran past. It was not one giant paw. It was six kitten paws.”
The celebration drum went boom again. “The march!” cried the kittens. “We still have time,” said Sam. The team raced between the warm ferns. Their muddy back paws kicked up tiny brown specks. Marmalade called the beat. “Paws up! Tails up! Paws up! Tails up!” Sam ran at the front, grinning.
They reached the clearing just before the kitten march began. Bright ribbons hung from the low oak branches. Plates of raspberry buns covered a long stump. “We found the biggest paw print in the forest!” Marmalade announced. “And Sam discovered who made it.” Sam told everyone to watch. The six kittens formed a circle on the packed dirt. Squish! Down went six paws. Up came one giant print. The whole clearing cheered.
Sam led the kitten march around the oak tree. Six muddy paws rose and fell behind. Afterward, Sam sat on a cool root with a raspberry bun. The kittens lined up beside Sam, tails curled close. In front of them, one giant paw print dried in the summer sun.
